Red Clover Field 2013

crimson clover seed, biodynamic spray and compost preparations, 11’ x 20’ plot

I followed biodynamic agricultural methods to plant crimson red clover in my front yard. Introduced by Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), an Austrian scientist and philosopher, biodynamic agriculture developed from his research and understanding of how the unseen forces of the universe affect the health and growth of plants and animals and, most importantly, the vitality of the soil. The soil in my front yard, after the application, produced a million worms, and the flowers attracted lots of bees, as well as an attentive neighborhood audience and passersby. Crimson clover is a medicinal plant that makes a nourishing tea that promotes relaxation and good rest,  and has many other uses. It is also an excellent cover crop for gardening, setting nitrogen into the soil.
