What We Want is...

On February 22, 2020, we hosted a fundraising event, What We Want Is______!, to fund a Ted Purves Memorial Scholarship honoring Ted Purves' contributions to the fledgling field of social practice through his art, writing, and teaching at CCA. An evening inspired by Ted’s generosity and warmth included a live auction, artwork raffle, speeches, and performances, and we raised $65K to launch a fund to support Graduate Fine Art students working in Social Practice. Hundreds of hours were devoted to making this celebratory event successful through the amazing love and support of friends, colleagues, and the greater Bay Area arts community. For most of us, it was the last in-person party we attended before the COVID lockdown. As CCA closes in 2027, I am working with CCA Advancement to reframe this fund to support CCA faculty and students, and to support new practices by students working in the expanded field of socially engaged practice.
