Red Clover Field 2013
crimson clover seed, biodynamic spray and compost preparations, 11’ x 20’ plot
I followed biodynamic agricultural methods to plant my front yard with crimson red clover. Introduced by Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), an Austrian scientist and philosopher, biodynamic agriculture developed his research and understanding of how the unseen forces of the universe affect the health and growth of plants and animals and, most importantly, the vitality of the soil. The soil in my front yard after application produced a million worms and the flowers brought lots of bees, as well as an attentive neighborhood audience and passersby. Crimson Clover is a medicinal plant that makes a nourishing tea, promoting relaxation and good rest, as well as many other uses. It also is an excellent cover crop for gardening, setting nitrogen into the soil.
