Adaptation of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis by Colin Wood
Director Miroslaw Kocur, a member of Jerzy Grotowski's Polish Laboratory Theater
Theater production presented at Theater Bernice, South of Market, San Francisco
Colin Wood attended my MFA exhibition staged in an abandoned storehouse at the Headlands Center for the Arts. He gathered I had a background in theater by the way the works were presented and "performed" in the three stories of the building. He invited me to workshop his adaptation of Kafka's Metamorphosis. It was a dream to work with a member of Grotowski's Theater Laboratory whose work I had admired and studied for years and inspired my theater works.
The work was fifty minutes and did not stop once it started, like a piece of music. There were no words, just movement and two musicians, a violinist who played above us on scaffolding and a drummer off set. The theater itself was charred black from a recent fire. I played both the daughter and charwoman, as well as the stage hand off stage.
